Operations Planner

The operations planner is responsible for optimally planning the manufacturing operations of each of the manufacturing plants according to project demand and to criteria of delivery dates, availability of manufacturing requirements, production constraints and project priorities.  The operations planner also has an important role as a central liaison between all departments in the operational chain.

Main responsibilities

  • Collaborate on a daily basis with the production manager to optimize the production master plan with capacity management, leveling of manufacturing hours and assignment of production batches per plant according to complexity
  • Maintain and share up-to-date information on the production master plan with critical dates from the schedules sent by project managers
  • Analyze internal production capacity overruns with the production manager in order to develop possible operational strategies. Then inform the scheduling committee where the final decisions are made
  • Maintain the information of the scheduling schedule (“Backlog”);
    • Factory start dates, date required on site, production start date
    • Progress of production batches by operation
    • Workload in manufacturing hours per operation
    • Weekly capacity in hours per operation
  • Other useful criteria for analyzing scheduling scenarios
  • Validate the availability of project requirements (drawings, steel, etc.) to ensure that the production batches will be ready to go to the factory according to the planned schedule
  • Analyze and propose different scheduling scenarios aimed at optimizing the use of resources, according to the constraints of the batches that are ready for the factory and those to come
  • Participate weekly in scheduling meetings where decisions are made on the next batches to be scheduled and those to be subcontracted, etc.
  • Participate in developing and improving working methods and tools
  • Feed the production master plan with new projects obtained in sales

Other functions

  • Participate in the analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Participate in the selection and implementation of new planning and integrated management software
  • Ensure that the deadlines agreed in the standard planning process are respected
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of processes
  • Integration of internal management of manufacturing memos (emergencies)
  • Review and coordinate with the expedition leader the projection of deliveries to be planned
  • Integration of the schedules of the design and engineering department

Training and skills

  • College diploma or bachelor’s degree in: Operations management; Industrial Engineering; Industrial Management; or equivalent training
  • 2 to 5 years of experience as a planner in a manufacturing environment
  • Functional spoken and written English
  • Mastery of Excel, MS Project and Office suite software
  • Knowledge of basic concepts and computer-aided production management software
  • Good knowledge of reading shop drawings of steel structures (asset)
